Week 1 Introduction: The "All About Me!"

Hey there! So first thing's first, my name is Desiree and I prefer being called Des! It's just easier to remember. I am enrolled in the Mythology and Folklore class for my Psychology major general education and I am so far loving the course. I also have completed everything for my Russian minor! I complete the last of my major requirements this semester, and I'm taking one extra semester to finish pre-requisites for Physician's Assistant school. So I will be graduating from OU in May! It's been a long 5 years but I have loved my time here.

Here is a little bit about me. I'm currently a photographer in a small family studio. I work mostly with small children but do often take family portraits as well as special occasions such as maternity, birthdays, newborns, business, anniversaries, you name it! I even get to do photography of pets in my studio. I'm a super artsy person so I love drawing and writing as well. I've written short stories of my own, poetry, and draw fantasy and anime style art. My other hobbies include video games and cosplaying (costume making and wearing!) I love reading fantasy stories and I'm all about anime/manga. My favorite series right now include the Grisha Trilogy and Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series. If you love fantasy genre, check them out!

Yes, that is a photo of one of my costumes that I designed and made from scratch! It is of a video game character from World of Warcraft, the Cinder Kitten pet. I go to many conventions to show off my costumes! I get to meet all sorts of wonderful people, especially photographers. I've done many costumes and get better every time at designing. I work with a lot of different materials that range from sewing to thermoplastics to paints and craft foam. It's all about creativity!

Speaking of kittens, I have one cat myself. He is about 3 years old now and his name is Trix. He's a doll and always keeps me company when I'm doing my homework (like right now.) Sometimes he's curious what I'm up to and gets in the way but that's okay because who can resist such an adorable face.

As of right now I'm extremely busy with work and school, but feel free to chat with me anytime! I love meeting new people and I'm always looking forward to making new friends here at OU. If I'm not working, I'm usually somewhere doing homework on campus (the life of the student, eh?) I spent most of my summer working, so there wasn't much to tell! The busy life keeps me on my toes. Hope you enjoyed reading!

  1. Hi Des,
It’s very nice to “Meet” you via your blog. One of my favorite things about this course is the ability to connect with other students through our virtual spaces. Congratulations on closing in on graduation! I know two more semesters seems like a long time, but I’m sure you know that it will fly by. What photography studio do you work at? Hopefully you will share some of your images on your blog this semester, I would love to see some of your work.

    Best,
    Mackenzie

  2. Des,
I think it is really cool that you design and make your own costumes! My wife has seen some ideas of costumes we could make on Pinterest for Halloween, but I have the feeling that if we tried, it might not turn out as well as we would hope.
I like you cat. I know what you mean about him getting in the way. I've seen my wife's cat lay right on top of the keyboard on her laptop while she was doing homework. It was as if he was saying, "No, no, no. It's time to give me attention now."

  3. Oh, I just now learned that you prefer to go by Des! I will go change your name in the blog directory right now - thanks for mentioning that here! And what a fun introduction: I love your cosplay costume!!! And that is so cool that you completed a Russian minor - I don't meet too many students who study Russian. That was my major in college (well, Slavic Languages - Polish was my main language, but I did a lot of Russian also). Maybe you will want to do a Russia-inspired project for this class. The Russian fairy tale and folktale tradition is one of the greatest in the world! With your interests and hobbies, it sounds like there will be all kinds of ways you can go with this class. I hope you will have fun with it!

  4. Hi Des! Your introduction was really fun and I enjoyed the images you included! It's awesome that you design and sew your own costumes and your cat looks like he has tons of personality! It seems crazy that you’ll be graduating so soon – time passes so quickly in college! I’m sure this is especially true when you work a lot during the school year as well, so I admire that you are able to do that and stay on top of everything!

  5. Des,
That is so cool that you are so involved with cosplay. Your costume looks fabulous. I've tried to make costumes a couple times from scratch but it hasn't worked out very well. What are your favorite conventions to go to? I've went to some smaller ones, but my I've been saving up for the San Diego Comic Con. Good luck with finishing your last year! It's crazy how fast college goes.

  6. Hello Des! It was nice reading your introduction blog post! It looks like you have a lot of fun and exciting things going on in your life. I really do enjoy getting to learn more about people and what they like to do, especially when they have interesting hobbies and interests like you do! Hope your last year at OU is the best yet, and congrats on your upcoming graduation!

  7. Wow you have some great artistic abilities! I love photography as well, but never pursued it professionally. I shoot friends and family portraits occasionally and love being behind the camera, not so much in front. The fact that you made that costume from scratch is amazing! I can't believe how much detail you put into it and it looks like it took a lot of time and skill. I also love cats. Unfortunately, one of my roommates here in Norman is allergic to cats so I can't have one here. But at home I have an orange tabby named Tigger who I love to cuddle up with every time I go home to Texas. Tigger also likes to get in the way while I do homework. He is more of a distraction than facebook sometimes. I can definitely relate to working and studying all summer because that's all I did too. Good luck in the future with PA school!

  8. Hi Des.
I'm really impressed at that costume you made from scratch! I don't think I could ever manage something like that. It's clear from your post that you're very creative and artistic. Your artistic skill shows through in your storytelling here too,I really enjoyed all the stories I read on your blog.

P.S. Your cat looks like a goof! Pretty cute.

  9. Hey Des! You sound like one interesting person. Congrats on graduating in May! I am also graduating in May after being here for 5 years. I have also enjoyed being at OU but I am so ready to graduate. Your costume is amazing! I can't believe you made that yourself. You could always become a design if you wanted. It was great to meet you. I hope you have a great last year here at OU.

  10. Hi Des!

I can tell that you have a spunky personality and a passion for life! That's so cool that you design your own costumes! That hobby is awesome. I wish I did something as unique as that! I just stick to Yoga. That's my thing. And congrats on almost being done with school! Woohoo May! I graduate this December, so it's coming up quick. Your kitty is adorable! Trix is a cute name, I'm happy he keeps you company! I enjoyed redaing your introduction, your voice shines through!

  11. Your introduction plus you pictures really say a great deal about you. You seem like a really fun and outgoing person with a very bubbly personality. An early congrats for being so close to the finishing line. I wish I could say that for myself. Bet you can’t wait? You cats are cute although I am not much of a cat person myself.

  12. Hey Des. I think it is really great that you are into cosplay! I when to a convention in Tulsa a few years ago to be at a Human Rights Campaign booth. There was so many eccentric people there. it was wonderful! It takes a lot of creative to design clothing and you did such a fantastic job. As a part-time player of WoW I think you have done a great job with that outfit. Also, I totally understand what you mean about your cat interrupting you while doing HW. One of our cats will jump up on the desk and if you don't pay attention to him he will plop down on whatever you are working on!!!! So annoying lol.

Anyways, I hope you have a great semester!

  13. That costume is amazing! I am always really impressed with how high of quality cosplay stuff can be. It looks like it would take up so much work and time, but I bet it is worth it when you get to show it off in front of people who appreciate what went into it. I am not really a cat person, but I will agree that your cat looks pretty adorable. I hope you enjoy your last year, and good luck with PA school!

  14. Hello Des nice to meet you! Congrats on graduating this Spring. Time flies doesn't it. I think it is cool how you are a photographer. Did you take and Senior Pictures for anyone in high school? Just wondering, because that could be a nice way to earn some extra money.

The costume of the kitten looks amazing! I can;t believe that you designed that whole thing. I also noticed that you are into Video games. I am as well and was curious to know if you were more of a computer gamer, or console gamer.?

  15. Hi Des! Nice to meet you! You are going to graduate with a Russian minor? How interesting! Was that a hard language to learn? Also, congrats on graduating in May. I bet your are excited to be finishing! The picture of your cat is so cute and hilarious. He reminds me of a cat I used to have as a kid. Anyways, I hope you have a great semester!

  16. Hey Des! Thank you for leaving a comment on my Bible Women storytelling post. I really appreciate your feedback! It sounds like you are super busy and creative. Your costume looks really awesome, I can't believe you made it yourself! It's great that you do photography, that's something I've always wanted to be able to do (but really haven't). Also I LOVE cats! I'm that weird cat person in a room full of dog lovers. Your kitten is so adorable! When I get a permanent address after college I'm definitely getting a kitty. Have a great semester!

  17. Des, I love that you do photography work! I love taking pictures with my mom's fancy camera and editing them and what not, but I think I would really enjoy doing something like you, especially if you get to work with pets at times! I am also creative and love reading, writing, crafting, etc. like you, so I guess it makes sense we both like photography and creating things. Your costumes are so cool and I am so impressed you made them all yourself!!

I look forward to reading your work this semester and hope you enjoy your time in this course!!

  18. Hi Des,

I love that you cosplay! It's always been something that appealed to me. But I have never given it a shot. It's even better that you make your own work. I know it requires a lot of handwork and time but I'm sure it's worth it in the end. It was great to "meet" you! Good luck with the rest of your semester.

  19. I love your costume. It is both feminine and sexy without being too showy. I have never been to a big Cosplay event, but my ex used to live action role play. I think those things are super interesting to watch.
